What is the Quality parameter on Midjourney?

Midjourney offers different ways to control image generation time. The Quality parameter allows you to determine how long Midjourney processes your input prompt. Higher-quality generations take longer and produce more detailed images. Low-quality values are perfect for abstract images, while higher values are ideal for architectural structures.

Not specifying the Quality parameter defaults to the highest quality image creation, though it does not affect image resolution. All images will have a maximum resolution of 1024 x 1024 pixels.

What values can you set for the Quality parameter?

The Quality parameter on Midjourney accepts values of 0.25, 0.5, and 1. Custom values larger than 0.5 are rounded to 1. Setting the quality to 2 is accepted in Midjourney versions 1, 2, and 3, but does not provide better results.

Regardless of the quality value, the output resolution of generated images remains the same. The file size of images will also stay consistent with one dimension maxed out at 1024 pixels.

How to use the Quality parameter on Midjourney

The Quality parameter can be added to your input prompt using the --quality (value) or --q (value) command. Simply append the parameter at the end of your prompt.

For example, you can use the syntax /imagine prompt --quality (value) or /imagine prompt --q (value).

After preparing the prompt with the quality parameter, send your request to the Midjourney Bot. Midjourney will process your image grid and provide a set of 4 images based on your prompt and quality value.

Experiment with different quality values to see the variations in image generation. For more reliable results, consider using the Seed parameter on Midjourney.

How do Quality values affect images?

The quality value determines the level of detail and time taken for image generation. Setting the quality to 0.25 generates images 4x faster and consumes 1/4 of GPU minutes. Quality 0.5 provides more intricate patterns with a 2x faster generation time and 1/2 of GPU minutes. Quality 1 is the default setting, consuming the same time and GPU minutes as without the parameter.

On Midjourney versions 1, 2, and 3, quality value of 2 does not necessarily improve results but consumes 2x more GPU time.
